How the Petition Works

This petition is a legal document that has the power to direct policy, that for whatever reason, has been overlooked by elected officials.

The Georgia Constitution provides a mechanism for citizens to amend or repeal their County’s Charter. The process is initiated by a petition that must be signed by 10 percent of registered voters in the county.

As of March 1, there are 166,265 registered voters in Chatham County. Which means the petition must gather 16,626 valid signatures for  curbside recycling to earn its place on a county-wide ballot. A simple majority would pass the amendment into law.
